Professional Standards

• I separate style and structure using semantic xhtml for your content, and styling it in a separate CSS file. This is industry best-practice, and has the following advantages over a site based on Flash or a tables-based layout:
  • Future-proof. Your site will more readily accomodate new web technologies. It will be easier to maintain and update. And next time that your site needs a redesign, it can be done simply and consistently by rewriting the CSS stylesheet - instead of every page of the entire site.
  • Search Engines. Search engines will know what is important on your pages, and can rank you more highly for the searches relevant to you.
  • Faster loading times. Separating style from content means smaller file-sizes, and faster loading pages.
  • Cross-browser, Cross-User Agent Accessibility Your web site will be more accessible to people with older browsers, to people who don't have flash, to people on dial-up, and people with screen-readers. In addition, it is possible to provide different stylesheets for print, mobile devices and screen-readers.
• Usability. Your web-site should not only look pretty, but allow your target audience to achieve their goals in as transparent and straightforward a way as possible.
• Accessibility. I build websites to be accessible to people with vision difficulties, and people using older browsers or alternate platforms (such as mobile devices and games consoles).
